With a multitude of unspoilt anchorages, beautiful, welcoming harbours and virtually unsurprising weather, the Greek islands are a sailing enthusiast's delight. The short distance between islands makes sailing easy, while winds are generally steady in direction. While sailing in the Aegean Sea can sometimes be a challenge due to the Meltem, there's always shelter not too far away, as there are plenty of anchorages to choose from.
Nestled in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, Greek villages with their white or colored houses are reflected in turquoise waters that sparkle under an eternally blue sky. Here, everything comes together for a dream cruise on a luxury sailing or motor yacht.
With a wide choice of yachts for charter in Greece, and thanks to our experience of more than 2 months spent in the Greek islands, we'd be delighted to give you the best advice for your vacation. Wherever you go in Greece and on the islands, you'll encounter a majestic culture and impressive natural beauty. Your luxury cruise will be unforgettable.
Located just 30 minutes from Athens international airport, the Lavrion marina is the ideal location for chartering a luxury yacht for a quick departure to the Cyclades (Kea, Kithnos then Paros, Naxos, Mikonos...). In case of strong winds, the Lavrion marina also allows you to set sail for the Saronic islands (Poros, Hydra), where the Meltem blows much less strongly than in the Cyclades.
The Alimos marina is very close to the center of Athens, just a few minutes from the port of Piraeus and less than an hour from the international airport. It's an ideal starting point for chartering a private yacht and sailing to the Saronic Islands (Egina, Poros, Hydra, see video above) and the Peloponnese. You can also visit two Unesco World Heritage sites: the Acropolis, with its Parthenon, and the Daphni Monastery. For a departure to the Cyclades, we advise you to start from Lavrion to save one or two days' sailing.
The Cyclades are located in the south-east of the continent. 220 islands make up the Cyclades and twenty one of them are considered as major islands such as Paros, Syros, Sifnos, Delos, Mykonos and Santorini. Departing towards the Cyclades is usually made from the marina of Lavrion located 30 minutes from the airport of Athens but you can also set sail directly from Paros (port of Paroika). Wherever you choose to stop in the Cyclades, you will discover clear, transparent waters, breathtaking panoramas and a welcoming population.
The golden beaches and turquoise waters of the Ionian Islands have been inhabited since the Stone Age. Boats are available from two luxury yacht charter bases on the 7 main islands and 30 minor islands: Corfu (Marina Gouvia) and Lefkas (Marina Lefkas). From either base, pleasant sailings await you to the other Ionian Islands, including Paxos and Ithaca.
Four main islands and 24 minor islands make up the Sporades in the Aegean Sea. Sailing and motor yachts for charter can be found on the island of Skiathos, renowned for its fortifications. This wooded island with its many beaches and coves is home to Mediterranean monk seals.
Their name means "twelve" in Greek, because they are 12 major islands (and 120 minor ones), located in the southern Aegean Sea, off the Turkish coast. Two of these islands, Kos and Rhodes, were once important trading centers. The Yacht Experience offers sailing and motor yachts for charter on both islands. A 14th-century fortress guards the entrance to Kos marina. This island was home to Hippocrates' medical school and was the most important trading center of the ancient era. Our partners will welcome you to the beautiful Kos marina on your arrival.
The spearhead-shaped island of Rhodes was once home to one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World - the Colossus of Rhodes - until an earthquake in 226 BC destroyed this symbol of prosperity. On your way to your luxury yacht in the port of Mandraki, you can see a pair of bronze stags where the colossus once stood. The island is also known for its fallow deer. In the Petaludes valley, you'll also find rare species of butterfly and hibiscus.
The prevailing wind is the Meltem which blows from the north as from June (force 5/6) and can reach 7/8 in July –August in the Cyclades and the Dodecanese Islands before settling in October. For families and persons desirous of a calmer sailing, we recommend the Ionian islands ( Lefkas and Corfu) and the Sporades.
Greece enjoys a mediterranean climate. The average air temperature is 30 degrees in July-August, that of the sea around 26 degrees.
