These four islands boast more than 360 beautiful golden-sand beaches. There are also many smaller islands and islets, such as Cabrera, just waiting to be explored. Mallorca, Menorca and Cabrera form what are known as the Gymesias. Ibiza and Formentera are often referred to as the Pityuses (perhaps an ancient reference to pine trees).
Ibiza is, of course, world-famous for its vibrant nightlife. Its wine culture is also very interesting: there are at least 13 winemakers on the Balearic Islands, and wine has been produced here since Roman times. The Cabrera Archipelago National Park comprises a group of 19 small islands and islets located around 10 kilometers (just over 6 miles) south of Mallorca. It is home to many species of seabirds, and its waters teem with dolphins, whales and other marine life.

The Sirocco (south) and the Mistral (north-west) are tempered by the Gulf of Lion and cause rough seas. Minorca is known as the Windy Island due to a cold and dry northern wind called the Tramontana. This has also led to the popularits of the island for sailors and windsurfers / kitesurfers.
